We spark curiosity before we demand rigor.

We do not believe in inundating our elementary students with endless hours of homework — we've embraced the research showing that countless life skills are learned outside of school, in the home. Inside the classroom, Berkeley Academy's faculty ensures the safety, passion, and meticulous attention needed to spark our students' curiosity and love of learning, built on the U.S. Common Core, Next Generation Science Standards, and Costa Rican Ministry of Education standards.

Lower Elementary (Pre-K–Grade 2)

Instructional math time focuses on representing, relating, and operating on whole numbers, initially with sets of objects, alongside describing shapes and space.

Upper Elementary (Grades 3–5)

Instructional time expands to addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, whole number relationships, linear measurement, and geometric shapes and volume.

English Language Arts

Word analysis, fluency, and systematic vocabulary development; advanced reading comprehension; literary response and analysis; written and oral English language conventions; and critical thinking skills that build standardized test-taking techniques.

Science

Berkeley Academy's science curriculum begins by engaging young learners to have fun, be proactive, and stay excited to learn about environmental, biological, life, and computer sciences — introducing students to science by helping them formulate questions and cultivate curiosity about the world around them.

Social Studies

Based on U.S. and Costa Rican history and world geography: U.S. states and capitals, world geography, Costa Rican provinces, U.S. and Costa Rican holidays and major historical events, and world histories with a strong emphasis on multicultural history.

Spanish Language Arts

Following strict MEP governmental standards, Berkeley Academy provides the basic Spanish grammar and language skills students need to succeed in middle school as they embark on the Costa Rican Bachillerato curriculum.

Creative Dance and Performance Arts

An innovative, forward-thinking initiative teaching attention to detail, teamwork, discipline, and confidence through the arts. Elementary students present two productions each year — one per semester — including every grade level.
