Founded upon the principles of honor, prestige and excellence, Berkeley Academy first opened its campus in August 2013 in Santa Ana, Costa Rica. A married couple with administrative and education backgrounds from both the United States and Costa Rica, Peter J. Swing and Yorlenny Aguilar, embarked on creating the first private educational institution dedicated to providing a multicultural studies K-12 curriculum in Central America.
The founders began creating the vision of Berkeley Academy by asking questions about their own family: How do we academically prepare our children for admission to the Top Tier colleges and universities in the world? How do we shape them to be caring, respectful and proactive global citizens? Where can we receive an educational environment that is personalized and intimate that teaches discipline, values, and respect for others?
With the direct guidance and counsel of the Costa Rican Ministry of Education and College Board, Berkeley Academy offered its students a world-class curriculum from their very first semester. Within just two years, Berkeley Academy graduates were accepted to the best universities and colleges in the world. Its first and inaugural graduating class (2015) of four students received acceptances to the University of California, Berkeley, University of California, San Diego, University of California, Davis, Purdue University, San Diego State University and Georgia Institute of Technology.
Today, Berkeley Academy students and graduates are changing the world and positively impacting their communities. Whether at the University of California, Berkeley in the Department of Mechanical Engineering or at Yale University’s Young Global Scholars program, Berkeley Academy students are truly making a difference.
